Leap Day Feb. 29 Should Be National Holiday, Says Zappos Most companies’ idea of going all out for Leap Day involves quirky sales or freebies, but one online retailer wants to go the next step and make Feb. 29 a day that all American workers eagerly anticipate. This year Zappos.com has big aims for those extra 24 hours that only appear every four years. The company will give all 1,600 of its employees a paid day off on Monday, Feb. 29. And it’s not stopping with its own workers. Zappos, which is owned by Amazon, is campaigning for Congress and the White House to give all non-essential workers the day off on Leap Day, just as they do with Independence Day or Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Only in the case of Leap Day, the day off would come once every four years, not annually. The company’s website explains its reasoning as: “Leap Day is a bonus day, and it should be used as a bonus day to do good â€" for your community, your family, or yourself.” To help achieve this dream, Zappos has created a Change.org petition to get Leap Day declared a federal holiday and launched a hashtag campaign, #TakeTheLeap, asking people what they would do with the extra paid time off. “We’re big proponents of our culture that encourages out-of-the-box thinking and bold stunts,” Zappos spokesperson Kristin Richmer told Adweek. “So celebrating Leap Day in a big way simply makes sense for us as a brand, while maybe not so much for other brands. We want to give that day back to the people.”

I havent asked for a raise because Im afraid to initiate the conversation.A second FGBer believes she deserves a raise but is afraid to actually ask for one. Shes not alone. Asking for a raise can feel challenging for a lot of women not only are we still paid less than men for equal work and experience on average, we also mora frequently suffer from imposter syndrome, which makes us believe we arent qualified for opportunities. Telling yourself you deserve this raise is the first step Give yourself the confidence to ask for more money were sure you deserve it. But make sure you prepare for the conversation with actual facts, numbers, examples and more of what youve brought to the company and why you believe you d eserve a raise.3. I havent asked before because I feared the vulnerability (however, Im currently negotiating a raise now).Another woman in the FGB community wrote that she is currently working on getting a raise. Shes waiting to hear back from her manager, which is common. Opening yourself up to the vulnerability and potential rejection is the hardest part, she said. And we agree. Rejection can always be difficult, but in this case, the risk of rejection is worth the reward. If you believe you deserve a raise, fight for yourself and your worth.4. My boss said a raise was coming but it never did.Sometimes rejecting people can be difficult, even for a manager. This FGBer had a manager who just couldnt tell her the truth about her raise, or lack thereof. If you have a boss who you can be direct with, let them know youd rather her be honest with you than misleading, especially when it comes to your hard-earned money.5. I was told there wasnt the budget for me to get a raise.One FGBer shared that even before she could formally ask for a raise, it was made clear to her that her manager didnt have it within their power to approve raises due to budget concerns. Unfortunately, she added in a separate comment, she didnt have the confidence nor know-how at the time to pursue a raise withstanding those obstacles.If youre interested in getting a raise but have similar concerns over budget, do some research on the compensation and performance-management calendar at your company. Salary increases are often timed around an annual or bi-annual date, when budget for management needs (including raises) is distributed.
